Residents of Khlong Toei, Bangkok’s largest slum, are tested for COVID-19 by Thailand’s Disease Control Department. This slum area is home to estimated 100,000 people (While the data does not show how many live in slums),  social distancing can’t help but be ignored due to crowded areas. As of now, anyone found to be infected with COVID-19 will be transferred to a nearby temple for quarantine.

Proximity is an important driver of infection, and low-income settlements in many cities of the Global South are very densely populated. Given that new infectious diseases will likely continue to spread rapidly into and within cities, low-income settlements need more effective infrastructure. According to the United Nations, about 1.8 billion people live in inadequate housing and homelessness around the world. It is just a matter of time before the next wave hits.
