94 year jail term for ex-Buddhism office chief

Former National Office of Buddhism director Phanom Sornsilp was detained by the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok back in August 2018.

The jail term for ex-Buddhist office chief Phanom Sornsilp added an additional 40 years to his already 54 years giving him the max life sentence of 94 years. Phanom Sornslip and his team was found guilty for the embezzlement of about 50 million baht from the Buddhism office allocated to Wat Bang Oi Chang, Wat Sri Ruang Boon and Wat Mai Phadung Khet temples.

The office embezzled a total of 80 million baht from various temples during that time. 94 years. He and other defendants were also ordered to return the embezzled money to the Buddhism office. All the defendants denied all their charges and had been denied bail since their arrest in 2018. They will all serve sentences ranging from 6  to 56 years.
