Fishermen turn to technology to make ends meet
Databases pair traditional fishing methods with high-tech marketing to sell fresh seafood online “We’re happy to help … we know that there are many more people in other areas who are left without access to fresh and clean food,” said fisherman Charoen To-intae.
Unlike the thousands made jobless and hungry by the Covid-19 crisis, many families who rely on traditional fishing methods for a living in coastal provinces still manage to put some food on their tables.
COVID-19 has hit fishermen hard, especially when they can’t sell their seafood at local fish markets.
It’s harder to buy essential items they cannot catch in the sea, such as rice, vegetables, and spices.
Recently, the Thai Sea Watch Association has stepped up its game in an effort to help local fishermen and customers. They have set up the Ran Khon Chap Pla (fishermen’s shop), an online shop that lets customers contact fishermen directly to buy seafood which is then delivered to their front door.
This cuts out the middleman thus giving customers the best price possible for fish.
