Police extort money from fishermen in Surat Thani – UPDATED VIDEO

Over 200 People surround a police vehicle after policemen allegedly extorted fishermen in tambon Thung Kong, Kanchanadit district, Surat Thani province, on Thursday.
Three police officers from Provincial Police Region 8 are being questioned after they allegedly made attempts to extort money from fishing villagers in Surat Thani. The fishermen are Scallop traders, who were also catching clams at the Tapee River when a police officer used a gun to hijack And seize 23 sacks of clams, weighing about 700 kg, and worth around 500,000 baht.

The police told the fishermen their methods were against the law but when Mr. Arucha (local fisherman) stated that he was allowed to catch clams in the natural method he was using, the police refused to listen and asked for 5 million baht or they would prosecute and arrest them.

After that, Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Rueangchan, Kanchanadit sheriff, and Col. Thaksin tried to negotiate a price before the whole fishing village showed up and surrounded the three police officers and fought for their rights.

Later, Kamnan Pongsak Chaikaew (Chief of police) came to help negotiate with the villagers, asking them to release the three officers. Villagers demanded that the police never come back to their village.
