Chiang Mai Elephant Camp Converts Elephant Dung into $$$–VIDEO

Mae Sa Elephant Camp staff members help to convert fermented elephant dung into money which in return, helps feed the elephants so they can repeat the process. The process is simple but smelly said one of the workers. She explained, after collecting the elephant dung we separate the leaves and grass before letting it ferment and dry.

Then we put it int a machine that turns the dung into pellets. “Organic elephant dung” is used to nourish the soil, both with pellets and straight untreated dung. Bags are then sold for a price of roughly 40 baht per kilogram for the pellets, and 30 baht per kilogram for raw dung.

Previously, the elephant camp used to produce organic elephant dung but stopped production for 3 months due to CoOVID-19.  They had to find new measures in order to support the lives of employees and elephants. The elephant camp is attraction/ tour offering elephant shows, elephant paintings, and offers experiences such as bathing & riding the elephants. Without tourists this is their way of survival.

Every day, employees handle at least 3 tons of elephant dung into fermented dung. The whole process takes about 4 months until it decomposes and becomes completely dry.
