China excludes dogs, just one of the animals who made its finalized lists list of edible and nonedible animals. In fact,  18 types of “traditional” livestock and poultry. For example; pigs, cows, water buffalo, yaks, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, camels, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigeons, and quail. Also, 13 types of “special” livestock and poultry. For example, deer, reindeer, alpacas, guineafowl, pheasants, partridges, ostriches. Four animals in the latter group — minks, raccoon dogs, and two species of foxes — may only be bred for commercial purposes other than food.

The list also specified that dogs should be classified as companion animals, rather than livestock, which is a big victory for animal advocacy. The Chinese government does not think dogs are livestock, and instead calls them ‘companion animals’ for the first time by China’s national government since 1949

The Chinese government has published a draft list of animals that can be farmed — for meat and for fur.

China also china excludes bats which were illegal for consumption before but not everybody follows the rules.

Animal rights groups argue that adding fur and wild animals to a livestock list will take away the animal’s identity of being wild.
