13 June  – A police officer from Ban Dan police station in Buriram province received a phone call from one of the local villagers in the area of Prasat Subdistrict saying that there was a drunken monk driving a sedan at such high speeds it actually rattled their house

.

When the police arrived at Ban Takotanet Village, they saw the monk standing in the middle of the road. After questioning him they asked his name which was Phra Pung, aged 51 years and definitely still intoxicated. His car was parked across the street from a bar and the monk was angry yelling at the police to go away.

Then the police officer invited Phra Jirapong to do some work at the police station in Ban Ban District due to his driving under the influence. He was still showing signs of being  frantic, challenging the officers and said he was not  brave enough feels he can not become a monk again “

A monk or not a monk, he was still taken to Ban Dan police station where he took a breathalyzer to test his alcohol level. The monk blew a 248 mg. percent. In Thailand, the standard Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is set at 0.05 percent, which means you are legal if there is no more than 50 mg/dl.  In normal circumstances, 50 mg/dl means about two glasses of beer.

According to police, Jirapong said that he normally resides in Prasat Subdistrict, Buriram Province, but he was ordained as a monk and went to a temple in Chang Phueak Subdistrict, Roi Et Province. He said he drinks because of the stress of being the headman of his temple as well as dealing with his ex-wife. He also mentioned he was upset that his relatives had to remortgage the farm due to not producing enough rice.

After the monk told his story, the  Deputy Inspector of Ban Dan Police Station, charged the monk with “drunk and driving” and sent him to detention at Buriram Provincial Court.
