3 Stimulus packages to help domestic tourism
The cabinet on Tuesday approved three stimulus packages worth 22.4 billion baht in hopes of giving domestic tourism a boost and expected to help 13,000 tour firms. In other words, the Thai government is paying its people to travel in efforts to boost their economy.
The packages will be available between July and October of 2020.
The first package:
worth 2.4 billion baht
Purpose: Will fund holiday travel for 1.2 million health volunteers and officials from sub-district hospitals across Thailand.
The deal:
1. Must use approved tour services and tours.
2. Limited to 2,000 baht per tourist.
3. Must be a minimum trip of at least two days and one night.
The second package:
worth 18 billion baht
Purpose: will fund subsidy accommodations, food, and other services provided at tourist destinations.
The deal:
- Hotel accommodations will be discounted 40% of normal room rates,
- limited to 3,000 baht per night for up to five nights.
- Tourists will have to pay the other 60%.
- food is capped at 600 baht per room and per night.
- Tourist facilities must be outside the tourists’ home provinces to qualify. The subsidies are limited to 40% of actual expenses, with tourists paying the rest.
The third package:
worth 2 billion baht
Purpose: Reduce domestic flight fares, inter-provincial bus fares, and car rental fees for a total of 2 million people.
The deal:
- Pays up to 40% of expenses.
- limited to 1,000 baht per tourist.
- Funding will come from the Finance Ministry’s 400-billion-baht Covid-19 economic recovery spending plan.
