25 June  Mr. Anucha Rueang-amonrat Mr. Amphop Phlapphalachai, Buriram province, was informed by Mr. Suasuda Sangsang, a village headman in Pa Chan Subdistrict that parents have complained about their 9-year-old granddaughter being hit by a 50-year-old man who lived just outside their village.

When police arrived the village headman lead police officers to the rice fields where 50-yr-old Mr. Pravit, was working. It was only 200 meters away from the home where the young 9-yr-old girl was raped. When the police approached Mr. Pravit, he did not resist and was in full cooperation with officials.  After that, the police brought him to the Phlapphla Chai police station to be interrogated.

During interrogation, Mr. Pravit told police that he had in fact sexually assaulted the 9-year-old girl, but that the girl had “consented” to having sex with him because she was “in love” with him.

Deputy Investigation Chief, Pol Capt Attana Ardsalee, said the girl had been sent to Phlabphachai Hospital for examination to collect traces of sexual abuse and will be questioned about the incident with officials from child welfare present.

Recently over the last few months, there has been a significant increase in the number of sexual assaults on minors across Thailand.

High-profile cases usually involve trusted persons or relatives, such as the recent case of a 3-yr-old girl found dead in Mukdahan and the case in Suphanburi of a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by seven relatives.

According to a recent UNICEF report, an average of 52 children are abused or molested every day across Thailand.
