A potentially deadly dose of an animal sedative was found in the water bottle of a runner who was hospitalised and claimed he’d been poisoned after he left it unattended. A chemical analysis of the water in the bottle concluded last that it was contaminated a high concentration of the horse tranquiliser Xylazine The analysis was conducted by a professor at Kasetsart University. The drug was found in the bottle Wirot Silabaht suspected had been poisoned by a would-be thief, as he nearly blacked out drinking it after running in a Bangkok park.

A jogger named Mr. Mirot says he noticed the taste of his water was not normal after he ran his normal 30-minute jog at Makut Rommayasaran Park.

But even the small swig he took made him feel nauseous by the time he returned to his office and nearly passed out. His co-workers took him to the hospital right away knowing something was off.

Later, Mr. Mirot and the bottle were both examined and both tested positive for Xylazine which is commonly used to anesthetize mammals, including horses, buffalos, and cats, but the amount in the jogger’s bottle would have killed him if he’d drank all of it.

The professor noted that Xylazine is normally only sold to veterinarians, but is also sold widely online as the known “date rape” drug.
