The Appeal Court has upheld the lower court’s death sentence against Nawat Tohcharoensuk, the former Pheu Thai Party MP for Khon Kaen, it was announced on Monday. Nawat was found guilty by the Khon Kaen Criminal Court in late September last year of masterminding the murder of a local administrative official seven years ago, and sentenced to death.

The Constitutional Court today ordered Nawat Tohcharoensuk, the Pheu Thai MP for Khon Kaen, to renounce his status as a member of parliament, after being sentenced to death for masterminding a murder by Khon Kaen criminal court. Nawat was found guilty of hiring the other defendants to kill Suchart Khotethum, the assistant chief of Khon Kaen provincial administration organization, for the victim’s affair with his wife.

The court also ordered Nawat to pay 300,000 baht in restitution for the victim’s funeral costs.

The ruling was based on witnesses’ testimony, and a trail of forensic evidence, and phone calls.

Nawat request to be released on bail, pending an appeal was denied and will continue to stay in police custody.
