Biometrics at Thai airports continue to crack down on crooks
Dermalog’s biometric border control solution has processed millions of people while assisting the Thai Immigration Bureau by detecting thousands of travelers either on the national blacklist or in breach of visa violations since it was placed inside Bangkok airports in May 2019. The biometric system has even detected those who were previously arrested for fraud.
Most recently on July 14th, 2020, there were Thai nationals returning from Japan on flight JL031 after permission was granted for them to travel back to the Kingdom of Thailand. While the two proceeded through a checkpoint, a BIOMETRICS system alerted examining personnel that one of them had an arrest warrant in Chiang Mai for human trafficking offenses. The offender was wanted in connection to trafficking three women for prostitution by members of an organized crime syndicate.
Meanwhile, Immigration officers kept their cool even though they had no power to arrest the suspects as their case was under the jurisdiction of Chiang Mai police who were patiently waiting for them outside the airport.
Finally, the suspects had to be detained for 14 days while under surveillance and observation at a state quarantined facility (according to STATE QUARANTINE measures) coordinated with Muang Chiang Mai Police Station. Chiang Mai police later continued with prosecution as they left quarantine.
Thailand currently has 1,020 biometric counters fully operational strategically place for entry and exit which only takes 0.1 seconds to perform face recognition and match fingerprints.
