Thailand tightens borders over fears of second wave of coronavirus
As the land of smiles enters its 75th day without any new cases of the coronavirus, other bordering countries are facing yet another wave.
As a result, Thai border control on land is on high alert in fears it might spread into Thailand after thousands of illegal migrants were arrested in the past month.
Recently on August 6th, more than 20 cases have been reported at a Sadao checkpoint. Thai immigration officials conducted an intensive screening process along the border of Kedah, Malaysia. But many still get through untraced said officials.
The report also stated that many Malaysians returning from India were not being quarantined. As a result, a restaurant owner delivering goods in and out of the Sadao checkpoint was found positive.
This resulted in the governor of Songkhla taking extra measures (Intensive level) to conduct driver profile screening from those entering from Malaysia. Authorities will track individuals in Sadao District, Hat Yai, and Songkhla, requiring them to fill out a form if staying longer than 7 hours. Anything longer must be approved by the sheriff of Sadao on a case by case basis.
On August 8, 7:30 am, officials found 22 Myanmar workers hiding under a bridge next to a canal behind the new Sadao customs checkpoint, three of them had a high fever and were waiting to be smuggled into Thailand for a price of RM2,000.
